The meeting will be in Inch Hall on Wednesday 8th Feb at 7:30PM
Please come along!

As part of Bulmers' Doing Our Bit campaign Bulmers has hidden 17 golden apples, each worth €5,000, in Christmas promotional packs of Bulmers' cans and longnecks. Each of the 17 lucky golden apple winners will win €2,500 for themselves, in addition to €2,500 for a community project of their choice.

The first lucky winner is stay at home mum, Amy Murphy from Killeagh, County Cork. Amy has decided to donate €2,500 to the Killeagh Inch Community Council. "Killeagh Inch Community Council does everything and anything for the community managing a whole range of community projects from installing a defibrillator and training up a group of volunteers to use it, to offering: community care; a Monday Club for the active retired and a historical society. They are very active within the community and have a huge effect on the quality of life for those living in the village." said Amy.

Successful Launch of Killeagh Book

The Community hall in Killeagh provided an ideal setting for the launch of “Killeagh Parish Through the Ages” on Friday 18th November.

Amidst a packed audience numbering over 250 people David Kelly, engineer and historian, in the opening speech spoke of the monumental work the book presented and was sure the extensive family genealogies outlined would stir everyone’s appetite to read it. He formally announced the book launched and was presented with a copy by Anne O’Neill, Chairman of the Killeagh/Inch Historical Group. David Kelly, also a contributor to the book, wrote an interesting chapter on the architecture of St John the Baptist Parish Church in which honour the book was written.

Fr. Broderick of Killeagh, Brinsley McDonnell - Chairman of the Killeagh/Inch Community Council and Nuala O’Connell of SECAD.

John Hogan stressed the importance of recording histories, old names and places which were frequently lost in the passage of time. He also dwelled on the increase in crime and made a plea for the maintenance of rural services such as Garda stations to combat this increase. Father Broderick PP in his address referred to the time when there were 9 weddings in the parish on one Shrove Tuesday. No weddings were allowed in Lent so you got a lot on the day before Lent started. He also stressed the recoding of history to preserve the Irish language and mentioned how grateful he was that Father Power 150 years ago, when St John the Baptist was first built, wrote a book of sermons,Teagasc ar an Sean-Tiomma, in the Irish language. The last talker was Nuala O’Connell who said that SECAD was committed to helping community based projects and wished the historical committee every success with the sales of the book. Paudie Lee, Secretary presented her with a copy.

Over tea and refreshments the Killeagh/Inch Historical Group showed extracts of the book on a slide projector set up by Paudi Lee whilst Bernadette Buckley Twomey showed her musical skills by playing delightful background music on the piano.

Other guests present included Sanda McLellan, TD, David Stanton, TD, Edward Wallace, Chairman of the Cork Genealogical Society, Mrs O’Brien, a prominent senior citizen who was also presented with a book, Seamus Forde of Muintir na Tirea and Dr Kieran Groeger, retired Principal of Youghal CBC.

Also present were members of local Historical Societies, neighbouring Community Councils and local clubs.

The evening ended off with presentations to Anne O’Neill and Paudi Lee in recognition of the contribution they made in writing and researching the book and finally Finbarr Motherway, The Master of Ceremonies, closed the evening.

The Historical Group would like to thank all the people who submitted photographs, records and their family memories both past and present. Without them the book would not have been a success. A big thank you.

Rural Transport Programme

Every Friday a bus runs from Killeagh to Youghal following this route - Ballymackeigh, Ballinalough, Mt Uniake, Ballyre, Monabraher, Park, Clasheel

The bus departs Killeagh at 9.30am approx, and for the return departs Youghal at 12.30pm approx

Once monthly the bus goes to other venues such as dungarvan or Cobh

The bus is free to those with a travel pass and there is a small charge to others

The route can be slightly adjusted to accommodate and new participants

Monday Club Update

Now mid-way through its sixth year the club has had a busy summer season which kicked off with an indoor bbq in Killeagh Hall in early June.

Next up was the 4 day trip to Donegal and Northern Ireland, based in Letterkenny. Arranged with O Connor Tours of Kilbrittain this was a highly successful trip for the fifty people who travelled.

The Daniel O Donnell concert at Cork Opera House saw a bus load of Killeagh folk enthralled by the way man from Dongeal in early July.

A day trip to Waterford was quickly booked up – morning tea/coffee in the Park Hotel in Dungarvan, train trip from Kilmeaden, visited Waterford Glass showrooms, spent a while at the new Rice Chapel at Mount Sion, did some shopping at Dovehill Shopping Centre before dinner at the Park Hotel followed by music in the bar!! Forty eight tired travellers leading homeward.

Youghal’s Bru na Si was the venue for a very enjoyable seisuin in late July – attended by approx 30 Monday Club members.

The Trip to Booley House on August 24^th was thoroughly enjoyed by the 40 patrons who travelled.

Planning is a foot for the Autumn – first meeting on September 5^th @ 10.30am – guests Fionnuala Mc Govern reflexologist and Michael Hackett author and story teller – new members always welcome.

We will have the official opening of our playground on Saturday, August 27th at 5.30 PM.
Minister Simon Coveney & Joe Deane will attend, and if you would like to cap off your evening - we will have a BBQ at Greenbarn that night.
Tickets for the BBQ €15 and can be obtained from Council members.

Tickets also available at Coleman's Newsagent in the Village.

Ambulance Service

Hi All,

You may have heard that the ambulance service is being withdrawn from Youghal in September.

This is an important, life saving, service, and should be kept in place. Withdrawing the Ambulance will put lives at risk.

There will be a public meeting in the Walter Raleigh Hotel next Wednesday 27th July at 8 PM to protest this.

There is a petition available to sign. You can sign at any of the shops in Killeagh village, or at a number of venues in Youghal.

New Playground

Hi All,

And, as you can see below, we have some great news!

Construction has begun on the new playground, and as of last Friday, 1st July, this was the progress.

We hope to open the playground in August, so be sure to bring your kiddies along to it!

It's in a great spot, just at the entrance to Glenbower Wood, so you can take a nice walk in the wood afterwards.

Looking forward to seeing you. And, keep an eye out for more information about our Music in the Woods festival on Monday, August 1st.

SECAD have approved funding for the construction of a new playground at the entrance to Glenbower wood. We hope to be opening the playground in August!

Very well done to the organising committee who have put over 2 years work into getting the project this far.

We hope to be looking at signing contracts this month, and begin work in April.

Killeagh History & 150th Anniversary of the Church.

As part of a project to commemorate the 150^th anniversary of Killeagh Church we are going to bring out a book on the history of the parish. We are looking to copy as many old photos that may be available and gather any history written or oral. Photos of any description are needed – relating to families, schools, farming, sport, any occasion, etc. The aim of this project is to catalogue the history of our parish from as far back as possible to near the present and produce a book of same.

A community council meeting was held last night in Inch Hall.

A lot of issues were discussed regarding, roads, car parks, housing etc. If you have any issue that you feel should be addressed please drop us an email or check us out on facebook.

We are also looking for people to be trained up in the correct and safe use of the defibrillator. The course will be ran when we have enough participants so if you are interested please send us your name and number and we will put you on the list.

it now looks like Coillte will not be able to move their timber out of the wood until after Christmas. Because of this, we ask that you don't take any timber until Coillte have removed theirs.

From Monday Coillte will begin removing felled timber from the wood. Once they have removed their timber, the timber which was felled around the proposed playground will be available to members of the public.
The timber is in 6 to 9 foot lengths. No Chainsaws Please!

If you know someone who would benefit please let them know. Also, donations to the playground or the wood would be welcome!

As we mentioned earlier, replanting will be in native species.
Aroundabout February or March, Coillte plan to replant in mostly Oak, some Yew and Ash.

Also, we've received some questions about the ownership of the playground land. This year the land for the playground was signed over to the playground.

Finally - PLEASE observe the safety notices for the duration of planting & felling.

Also there will be a little demo of how it all works, plus how to save a person who's choking.

We have taken delivery of a De-fibrillator, and hope to launch our First Responders group in November. The probable date is Nov 16th in Killeagh Hall. come along if you're interested! Would you like to train in how to use this life-saving piece of equipment?

The playground is getting closer. At the moment we are waiting for final approval from South and East Cork Area Development (SECAD). Once this comes through we can get contractors on site to begin work. FINGERS CROSSED!

Finished Wall

We finally got there!

With a huge effort from some volunteers, we have a repaired wall (with stone facing) in the old graveyard in Killeagh Village.

It looks great, and there are a load of people to thank from those who helped clean up, to those gave their time to those who donated materials (especially the stone!)

In the end we got a prize of €100 for the 'Pride in our Communities' competition, but that was more than spent on materials such as cement, etc.

St. Fergal's Primary School

As you can see from the pictures below, we've done very well in the old Graveyard in Killeagh. Unfortunately, we've hit a snag - we don't have enough stone to finish the job of facing off the wall in stone.

The stone we need it limestone, if you have any to spare, or know someone who might, please let us know so that we can get the graveyard looking even better!

Volunteers Wanted!

The Pride In Our Communities competition has begun.

For our part in this we have started work on cleaning up the old graveyard in Killeagh.

Work will take place every Tuesday night at 8 PM for the next number of weeks.

We are hoping to re-build the fallen sections of wall between the two old cemeteries; to clean all the footpaths; to place a seat inside the front gate; to repaint the gates; to remove weeds and overgrowth.

So, if you would like to play a part in improving the cemetery, come along next Tuesday!

Especially if you have a strimmer, hedge trimmer, hoe, paint-brush, brush, or can lay a few blocks.

De-Fibrillator

Last night we had our first training session for a de-fibrillator for Killeagh and Inch. 12 people took part in the training which will be completed tonight. Many thanks to those who are taking part in the training - it's a very busy two evenings that they are giving up.

Shortly we will take delivery of a de-fibrillator and will set up an emergency call-out system in the parish.

During the Summer we plan to train some more people in the use of the De-fib machine, and work up to an effective call out system where a team of people across the parish will be trained in the use of this life-saving equipment.

Suicide Alertness

We had our training last night in SafeTALK, a programme designed to give people skills to help those thinking of suicide.

It was a very successful evening with 22 volunteers coming along for the training - many thanks to them for giving up their time.

If you are concerned about suicide, the HSE suicide prevention helpline is 1800 742 745 and it's open daily from 6 - 10 PM.

It seems that there is an upsurge in crime in the East Cork area. Here's a few pointers to help keep you & your property safer.

Cars - lots of theft from cars. Don't leave sat-navs, wallets, purses, mobiles visible in your car.

Agri-machinery is being targeted. Keep an eye out, and if you see something suspicious, call the guards.

Keep tools (especially power tools) locked in a shed when not in use.

Lock your doors!!! A surprisingly large number of burglaries take place through an unlocked door.

Lock your gates. Theft of home heating oil and diesel is becoming more common. Don't make it easy for them.

Know your workmen. Don't let people start on a job if you didn't ask them. There are bogus tradespeople out there. Be willing to ask people for I.D, and call the guards if you're suspicious (youghal station at 024 92200)

National Spring Clean

We are looking for volunteers on Tuesday nights over the Month of April.

Starting next Tuesday 13th April.

At 7 PM one group will meet in Mt. Uniake to clean up around the environs of the village, while in Killeagh a group will meet outside the hall to clean up around Killeagh.

Following is a Report from our Annual General Meeting, held on 11th Feb in Killeagh:

The A.G.M. of Killeagh/Inch Community Council was held in Killeagh Hall on Thursday 11^th February. There was a good attendance present. Ollie Sheehan, of Carrigtwohill Community Council presided over the meeting. Following reports from our Secretary, Treasurer and Chairman the election of officers took place.

SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS

PLAYGROUND: A report prepared by Mary Griffin was presented outlining that full planning permission had been obtained for the site which has been transferred to them in Glenbower Wood. Submissions are being made to SECAD and Cork County Council seeking grant aid and maintenance aid. The main fundraiser to date has been the BBQ which was held in Gazebos in August which was a great community night out and raised approx €6,000. Further fundraising will be discussed when the works commence.

MONDAY CLUB: Finbarr Motherway and Kathleen Rohan gave a comprehensive report on the activities of this club during the past year. Again this club goes from strength to strength running a number of courses and social activities. Highlights of the year included a day trip to Cahir, a night out to Opera House, Womens and Mens Health courses, hosting a Health Information evening, Arts & Crafts, and a very well attended Christmas Party. The Monday Club meets on the 1^st Monday of every month in Killeagh Hall. All welcome

RURAL TRANSPORT: This venture was initiated during the past year. It runs every Friday departing from Killeagh at approx 9.30 a.m. and returning from Youghal at approx. 1.30 p.m. Numbers are good but there are seats available. This bus is free to those with free travel and a nominal fee is charged to those without. Please contact Finbarr Motherway or any member of the Community Council if you seek any information re same. New participants would be welcomed to ensure the continuance of this scheme.

COMMUNITY CARE: Margaret Scully gave a report on the current position with regard to personal alarms, smoke alarms and security lighting. These benefits are available to over 65’s who qualify for same. This scheme is now running and any enquiries should be directed to Margaret Scully, Ann O’Neill or Olivia O’Rourke. To date a number of alarms have been installed and a number of eligible people throughout our parish have benefited from this scheme.

TIDY TOWNS: This committee has to be commended for their trojan work on keeping our village decorated with flowers and plants. They were praised for their hard work on keeping our village tidy given its location on the main road from Cork to Rosslare. Fintan McCarthy was also mentioned for his tireless work in cleaning up our local area. This committee make our village a more pleasant place for us all.

PRIDE IN OUR COMMUNITY: An award was made to the Community Council by Muintir na Tire for their work under the above scheme. The project undertaken was a clean up of the Old Graveyard. A public appeal for help was made and there was a great response to same. Sadly the weather in the summer of 2009 did not do much to help the project but it is hoped to start again early in 2010. The work of all volunteers who gave of their time must be acknowledged. Volunteers will again be sought and any help will be greatly appreciated.

HISTORICAL: Ann O’Neill gave a report from this sub-committee and stated that the Catholic Church in Killeagh will be 150 years old next year and that the Historical Society were hoping to help mark this event. This committee continue their work researching and gathering information on all items of historical interest in our parish.

DEFIBRILLATORS were also discussed and it was agreed that this matter will have to be finalised at the March meeting. It is hoped to purchase defibrillators and initiate training courses at the first possible opportunity.

ROAD CONDITIONS: The meeting then continued with a general discussion on the atrocious road conditions that prevailed following the treacherous spell of bad weather over Christmas. All matters addressed will be forwarded to the Area Engineer for his attention.

ILLEGAL DUMPING was another matter discussed which is particularly appalling on the slip road running from the Tallow Road to Ballydaniel and Park School. This is a disgraceful practice and the Community Council are endeavouring to report and get to the root of this problem.

A vote of sympathy was passed to community council member Margaret Lucey and the Lucey family on the death of her father-in-law Johnny Lucey.

Our chairman John and his wife Yulia were congratulated on the birth of their new baby daughter.

The next meeting will be held in Inch on 4^th March at 8 p.m. All members please try to attend. In his chairmans address John expressed disappointment that all members do not attend our meetings regularly so for 2010 let your resolution be to attend as often as possible.

Glenbower Wood & Lake

Coillte will begin felling of certain areas of Glenbower wood next week.

The land at the left side of the road from the Metal Bridge to the second barrier and two other small sites further up will be the first for felling.

Please observe safety precautions if you are going to be near any of these areas!

The felled areas will be replanted with native broadleaf species. Eventually, Glenbower will be replanted as a native broadleaf woodland.

There will be more felling later in the year, with replanting hoping to begin soon.

County Development Plan

Yesterday, Thursday 18th members of the community council met to discuss the upcoming county development plan, and how it relates to Killeagh and Inch.

Following the meeting we are preparing submissions to Cork County Council on a number of points. Please feel free to comment on what's below by emailing killeaghinch@gmail.com

We will make our official submission next week.

Following is an outline of the points we will make towards the County Development Plan.

The water supply to Killeagh Village is inadequate. This issue has been raised a number of times with Cork County Council and in the Dáil.
The graveyard on the Cork Road is nearly at capacity. We are looking for the provision of a new graveyard.
The old development plan allows for the development of a second primary school on the Cork Road. Keep this in the plans.
Parts of Killeagh Village are an Architectural Conservation Area. We would like to see some structures listed as protected structures.
Maintain the existing zonings at Inch, Ballymackibbot (the area around Inch Primary School) and Mt. Uniake. (Current zoning is as a Village Nucleus)
Revise the speed limits for Mt. Uniake and Ballymackibbot.
In the long term there is a bypass planned of Killeagh and Castlemartyr. We would like the route for the bypass made public and access points for the village clarified.
Look at the long-term feasibility of re-opening the railway to Youghal, with a stop in Killeagh.

Roadworks!
Anybody who has gone through the village today has seen some serious level roadworks going on. The NRA has surprised us all by doing a very fast assessment of work and beginning immediately!

Expect the work to take a few weeks. They're doing a proper re-surfacing on a stretch of the road going from Cork Road corner to the bridge by the Thatch.

Or, at least, that's what we've found out so far!

There are two events coming up at SECAD in Midleton:

For those hoping to improve future career prospects, there is a career coaching programme at the SECAD offices in midleton coming up. There will be an information evening on 18th November at 7.30 PM. Phone (069) 77145 for more information. This is an EU funded programme. This is aimed for those who do not have a leaving cert and are in employment.

SECAD is setting up a carer's network. They will hold an information meeting on 26th November at 11AM to 1 PM in their Midleton Office. Phone 021 461 3432 for more information or to book in.

Community Alert and De-fibrillators are the subject of the meeting. All are welcome, and a few more details are listed below.

Diarmuid Cronin, Muintir na Tire rep. for Community Alert, and Garda representatives will attend and speak in relation to community alert matters and crime prevention in our community.

John O’Brien, Paramedic together with a paramedic colleague from Castletownbere who has been instrumental in setting up a First Responders Group in his area will also attend. The aim of the Community Council is to purchase defibrillators, have training courses and ultimately have a defibrillator and a volunteer available at all times in our Parish.

Last Thursday, 22nd October, some of the Killeagh and Inch Community Council travelled to Oriel House, Ballincollig for an awards night for those who participated in 'Pride in our Communities'. There were a number of communities represented with some worthy winners.

The projects undertaken this year ranged form river walks to sensory gardens to cleaning up graveyards. Over 30 projects were represented on the night.

Killeagh took home a cheque for €100, and we plan to re-invest it in finishing off some of our work in the old graveyard in Killeagh.

National Trails Day

We are getting closer to National Trails Day, and Sunday 4th October will be a busy one in the parish.

From 11 - 2 we will have the walk in the woods. (complete with a little map and a few goodies courtesy of the good people in Coillte)

From 2 - 6 Inch Hall will have it's annual fete.

And also on Sunday there will be a fun ride in Killeagh (I don't have details for that one)

Glenbower Wood & Lake was set up over 20 years ago an cares for approximately 30 acres of Glenbower Wood for the community as a whole.

It is a great amenity for the village and surrounding are and working together we an maintain and enhance its recreational value.

An update on the fundraiser BBQ that was held a few weeks back.

The amount raised was just under €6,000.

Many thanks to everyone who attended, to everyone who donated, and to the committee who put in so much hard work to setting up the night, and selling the tickets.

This week we will submit our planning permission application.

Other news?

Coillte, a semi-state body tasked with managing forestry in Ireland, is planning to cut 5 Hectares of coniferous trees in Glenbower wood. They hope to do this possibly next August. The cut area will be re-planted with native broadleaf species. Around the same time, Coillte hope to invest in the recreational aspect of the wood. (better paths, more signs and information)

graveyard Clean Up

Again, a big "Thank You" to everyone who came out tonight to help cleaning up the old graveyard in Killeagh.

Lots of work done tonight in clearing footpaths, removing ivy from walls, and general tidying up.

We'll do it all again next Tuesday. Overall, it's making a great improvement to the appearance of the graveyard.

Many thanks to everyone who turned out yesterday evening (Tuesday) to help clean up the old graveyard in Killeagh. We had a very successful evening's work, and plan to do it all again next Tuesday 11th from 7.30 to 9 PM. (Weather Permitting!)

Work completed included removing ivy from the wall and cleaning the footpaths of moss.

We are looking into putting in two stone seats for the convenience of those who visit the graveyard.

The community council has recently been informed that the promised upgrade of the water supply to the village is not to happen for the present. The National Roads Authority or NRA as they are more commonly reffered to will not be commencing their previously planned traffic calming works in Killeagh Village for the present time because of financial cutbacks within their department.These works are now on hold with no new start date identified, however there is plans to provide a 'temporary re surfacing job' on the current street surface in killeagh village within the next couple of months. please watch this site for further updates as they become available to us
